It is very simple to join The Metcalfe Society.   There are 4 different ways to join and you can choose whichever method is most convenient for you.

Simply Join Online Here   and you will be taken to the Membership page.
From here you can choose the type of membership - Overseas or UK.
Follow the instructions through to payment and confirmation.
. Don’t forget to choose the Gift Aid option if you are a UK taxpayer (more information below)
Please note there is a small charge for paying via credit card/Paypal to cover the processing fees.
There are no charges for postal applications, just the cost of the post itself for you.

2. By post and pay by UK sterling cheque

Download the New Member Application Form   or
Contact the Membership Secretary (see  Contacts)   to request an application form to be sent to   you via post or email.
Complete the application form and send it with the payment to the Membership Secretary.

3. By post and pay by standing order   (UK bank holders only)

4. Via one of our overseas agents to enable you to pay in the local currency

If you live in Canada or Australia contact our local agent (see  Contacts)  to request a New Member  Application Form (or download the form from the website). The agent will advise you on how you can make the payment locally.

Gift Aid - Tax Recovery from UK Taxpayers

This scheme allows charities to claim back tax you have paid. If you pay taxes in the UK, you can help The Society gain additional income at no cost to yourself whatsoever. May we thank you in advance for choosing this option.

  • If you are joining The Society online, all you need to do select the 'Yes' option on the Gift Aid Declaration, which confirms you are a UK tax payer and that you wish us to treat all payments from the date on the form as Gift Aid and agree to us claiming the tax back on your behalf, until such time a you cancel it.

  • If you are joining The Society via post, please ask for the Gift Aid Form from the Membership Secretary or you can download the Gift Aid Form.

How many years can I pay for?

When joining (or rejoining) the society, you can pay for as many years as you wish knowing that if/when the membership rates rise, then you have avoided any of the cost increases, and as we all know how busy life is these days, paying for a number of years will save you the time and effort of remembering to renew your membership!   The choice is yours!

Rejoining the Society after a few years lapsed membership?

We are always delighted to welcome previous members to rejoin the society. The above processes are the same for rejoining members who have a lapsed membership for more than a year. If your membership lapsed for more than five years, we do ask that you include the Research Fee in your renewal to allow our Archivist to recheck any recent information on the database and update your Birth Brief. Please let the Membership Secretary know if you can remember your old membership number and we can reinstate that for you, if not, we can also what your number was originally.

Queries / Problems

You should receive your new membership package within 2 weeks of joining The Metcalfe Society, or within a week if by email. If it does not arrive, or you have any other membership enquiry, please contact the Membership Secretary (see  Contacts). Today, most contact is now by email, although we do appreciate that not everyone has access to a computer, so please use whichever method is most convenient for you.

Overseas Agents in Canada and Australia

We have two overseas agents, one in Canada and one in Australia - who are available to answer your queries locally and also specifically to enable you to join and/or pay your membership in your own local currency   (see   Contacts).
